The Friends of the Wellington Botanic Garden welcome your interest in our website. As with all our work, the site is designed to promote and support the Garden and its educational, historical, cultural, recreational and scientific functions.

The Friends is a purely voluntary organisation. It has no formal role in terms of the upkeep and maintenance of the Garden. That is the responsibility of the Wellington City Council and its staff.

What the Friends seek to do is add value to the work of the professional staff. We operate a guiding service. We run seminars and workshops. We fund research and develop proposals that we consider will enhance the visitor appeal of the Garden. We support financially, and in other ways, specific projects for the restoration or preservation of heritage features in the Garden.

Competition for community resources, and the increasing costs of maintenance and upgrading, requires continuing vigilance by residents and citizens of Wellington to ensure high standards of care and preservation can be maintained, The Friends provide a means for citizens to work together for that objective, as well as demonstrate their support for the most renowned and treasured asset of our city.

We welcome new members. Details of how to join are set out on this site.
