These notes introduce one of the main walks in the Garden, from the Cable Car entrance, downhill, and through the Main Garden. The reverse walk involves a moderate uphill climb. The Walk can be easily extended to include the Begonia House and Rose Garden, (Walk 4 ) and Bolton Street Memorial Park (Walk 5) to obtain an extensive introduction to its features. The time taken will vary depending on the time taken to view the sights; a full day could easily be filled on this walk but it can be completed in under an hour if you just walk.

It should be noted that the Cable Car entrance is one of the highest points of the garden; the Main Garden and Rose Garden and Begonia House are located at the lowest point. From the Rose Garden the return trip to the Cable Car can be completed, (up Serpentine Way and Manuka Way to East Way is the easiest) but requires a moderate uphill walk. Returning to the city through the Bolton Street Memorial Park is much easier, as it is downhill, and is hightly recommended. Additionally it passes through the Heritage Rose collection which is well worth visiting in the early summer.

The walk through the garden on the Downhill Walkway is approximately 1.6 km long. The contour is downhill, and the vertical fall is approximately 70 metres overall, although the Main Garden and Rose Garden area is basically of flat contour.

If you contemplate this walk and come by Cable Car, you should purchase a single ticket only. Return Cable Car tickets are now available which currently give a $1 discount over two single tickets if you intend visiting the Lookout only.

This walk enables you to see the main features of the Garden, and includes the Children's Playground and Duck Pond if you have children with you.

Paths are well formed on this walk, and are of moderate slope; relatively flat once the Main Garden is reached.

There are sectional maps covering the paths, with a number of notable trees identified. After each map segment a link provides notes on the featured trees
